Genetics of Sporadic Arteriovenous Malformation Study
The Joe Niekro Foundation™ is proud to fund the collaborative research study, “Genetics of Sporadic Arteriovenous Malformation,” at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center/Barrow Neurological Institute and Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). Both institutions are located in Phoenix, Arizona, however, you do not have to live in the Phoenix area to participate.
The study will include brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) participants and members of their immediate families (i.e., parents, siblings, children – must be blood relatives). Participants will donate a sample of saliva (5 mL) or blood (10 mL). Basic demographic and medical information will also be collected. Family members will donate saliva (5mL) and document their relationship to the primary participant. Nucleic acids will be isolated from the saliva/blood samples, and genetic sequencing will be carried out. Identification of genetic alterations common to patients with AVM and not present in samples from relatives will greatly aid in identification of pathways associated with AVM formation. The study is open to males and females between the ages of 6 and 60 years, inclusive.
If you are in the Phoenix area, please contact Mary Harrigan, RN, at 602-406-3343. Those living outside the Phoenix area should contact Translational Genomics Research Institute at www.tgen.org. Go to the Research tab, select arteriovenous malformation, and begin the AVM registration process.
Choosing to participate in any research study is an important personal decision. Talk with your doctor, family members, or friends about deciding to join a clinical trial.
